There was once a time when everybody in Sydney used to say that you should try Tetsuya’s at least once. So it’s been a bit of a disappointment that over the years Tetsuya’s ranking fell from number 5, to number 9 in 2008 and then down to number 17 this year*. The logical conclusion therefore is that either Tetsuya’s has slipped over the years, or the restaurant business has just become a whole lot more competitive. Either way, in my eyes, number 17 in the world is still a phenomenal feat and I’m proud that Sydney can call a top ranking restaurant one of our own.
I went to Tetsuya’s in what you could call their peak in 2007 when it was ranked at number 5. During that time, you had to book at least 3 months in advance for a table – and even when we did do that, the only time we could get a table was Saturday lunch!

This was so good…we forgot to take a photo before chowing down! :)

This is Tetsuya’s signature dish, and from pictures that people have taken more recently, it looks like he’s still serving this as part of his degustation menu. Absolutely divine!

I think Tetsuyas is wonderful, but maybe Sydney foodies have become a little jaded since a lot of his repertoire has been the same or similar since the 80s.
But it’s the closest we have to a true 3-star michelin experience in Australia, and that’s no mean feat. Tetsuya FTW
I gave up on Tetsuyas years ago. I tried to book, got told they were booked out for 3 months, tried to book again then, got told to call back again in 3 months. I didn’t give up. When I did call back at 9am the morning requested they said they were booked out again for months. I have tried many fine restaurants… they all don’t forget to treat the customer well… in my experience Tetsuyas has never understood this. Plenty more fish in the sea Mr Tetsuya.
Unfortunately that was the case with Tetsuya’s for quite some time. The exclusivity of getting a table made it even more so. I still think it’s worth the effort to make a booking though.
P.S. I’ve heard that thanks to the GFC, advanced bookings for Tetsuya’s dropped quite dramatically. If you’re still keen, maybe try again now.
great photos!

Nice write up.
Was definitely overrated when I went in Oct 09 and is an experience one could do without.
