Ocean Room – Sugar Hit

October 1st marked the start of Sydney International Food Festival* previously known as Good Food Month. For the food enthusiast in Sydney, this is the Christmas for foodies. October becomes a month of indulgence with the top restaurants coming together to bring us Sydney-siders a whole month of specials for every palate possible to help jolt us out of the winter blues. There are specials for almost every meal of the day and you’re just about guaranteed to try something new.

A definite crowd favourite is the Sugar Hit which is a dessert only course offered by a select number restaurants between 9 and 11pm. Perfect for a sweet treat if you’re not quite ready to go home after a night out!

Our first pick this month for a sugar hit was the Ocean Room at the Overseas Passenger Terminal which was only recently relaunched in September with a complete internal makeover complete with a flowing wooden ceiling made of thousands of wooden cylinders and a huge wooden chandelier above the bar. Truly awe inspiring.

Brown Brothers Dessert Wine

We were given a choice of a dessert wine or a glass of Hennessy cognac to start off with so we went with the wine. I’m no wine connoisseur so I forgot the name of the wine in a second but it was very sweet and really nice!

Citrus Breezer

Sweet and mellow with a slightly bitter after taste.

Chocolate Tasting Plate

My favourite of three desserts. There were two kinds of chocolate cake and a dark chocolate pipe. The ganache on the cakes simply melted in your mouth. Nicely complemented with a couple of orange slices.

Japanese Inspired Petit Four

We weren’t given much direction in terms of the components of the desserts so I’m not too sure of what exactly made up this dish. In fact, when we were first brought the desserts, we were told they were an “orange jelly, chocolate cake and honey cake”. Only when we asked another waiter were we told the more eloquent names for the desserts. Either way, the honey cake was light, fluffy and nicely contrasted with the crunch from the other pieces.

The Grand Chandelier

Like I said, amazing!
